Usually, biologics are used to treat those with moderate to severe IBD. One strategy for using these medicines is the “step-up” approach. Here, biologics are used after patients have not responded to other medicines such as aminosalicylates and immunomodulators.
Another strategy is the “top-down” approach. This is when doctors recommend earlier use of biologics. This may lead to better results in some patients, as there is a “window of opportunity” where using biologics sooner will maximize the benefits and help prevent future problems.
